Fenesta che lucive : Six great recordings: Caruso, Di Stefano, Lanza, Corelli, Tucker, Pavarotti
Fenesta che lucive is a Neapolitan song published in 1842. It seems to have been written by Guglielmo Cottrau but is sometimes attributed to Bellini.
The recordings on the video are as follows;
0:00 Enrico Caruso : Rec 1913
3:44 Giuseppe Di Stefano : Rec 1953
7:34 Mario Lanza : Rec 1958
11:11 Franco Corelli : Rec 1961
14:52 Richard Tucker : Rec 1965
18:15 Luciano Pavarotti : Rec 1985
I've tried to improve the audio quality of the Caruso recording that was made by purely mechanical means 12 years before the use of microphones and other electrical equipment in recording studios but, of course, it's still poor in comparison to the more modern electrical and stereo recordings.. Also, just to give a "live" effect with a little more presence and obscure noise at the start, I have added applause.
The song is basically the first and last verses of a longer poem as shown below.
ORIGINAL NEAPOLITAN POEM
"Cara sorella mia, che me dicite?
Cara sorella mia, che me contate?"
"Guardate 'ncielo si nun me credite!
Purzì li stelle stanno appassiunate.
È morta nenna vosta, ah, sì, chiagnite!
Ca quanto v'aggio ditto è beritate!
Va' nella cchiesa e scuopre lu tavuto!
Vide nennella toja comm'è tornata!"
Da chella vocca ca n'asceano sciure,
Mò n'esceno li vierme. Oh, che piatate!
Zì parrocchiano mio, abbece cura:
'Na lampa sempe tienece allummata!
Ah! Nenna mia, sì morta, puvurella!
Chill'uocchie chiuse nun l'arape maje!
Ma ancora a ll'uocchie mieje tu para bella
Ca sempe t'aggio amata e mmò cchiù assaje!
Potesse a lo mmacaro morì priesto
E mm'atterrasse a lato a tte, nennella!
Addio fenesta, restate 'nzerrata,
Me face nenna mia ire a trovare.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The window that was shining now does not shine,
It means that my beloved is ill.
Her sister looks out and tells me:
"Your beloved is dead and buried".
She always cried because slept alone,
Now she sleeps in company of the dead.
"Dear sister, what are you talking about?
Dear sister, what do you tell me?"
"Look at the sky if you don't believe me!
Even the stars are so sad.
Your beloved is dead, ah, yes, cry!
What I've told you is the truth!
Go to the church and open her coffin!
Look what's happened with your beloved!"
From her mouth came out the flowers,
Now the worms are coming out. Oh how sad
Oh priest, take care of her:
Always keep a light burning for her
Ah! My love, you're dead, poor girl!
You never open your closed eyes!
But in my eyes you're still beautiful
Because I loved you and now I love you more!
I wish I could die soon
And be buried beside you, my love!
Goodbye, window, stay closed,
Because my beloved can no longer look out
I don't pass along this street anymore.
I go to the cemetery.
Until the day when cruel death
Lets me meet my beloved.

Jean Sibelius (8th Dec 1865 to 20th Sept 1957) was a Finnish composer and Jussi Bjorling's grandmother was also Finnish. This concert was given at New York's Carnegie Hall on the 8th December 1957, exactly 92 years after the date on which Sibelius was born. The New York Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Martti Siliä. The full concert, or at least, the part that was recorded was, of course,...

This aria is from a radio broadcast complete performance, at the Metropolitan Opera New York, of Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut. I have heard it said that Jussi did not have a very large voice and that in live performance it was not always possible to hear him clearly. John McCormack's training in bel canto singing and breath control make his performance the most musical. He can glide between parts of a sentence, in one breath. That communicates best with the audience.

Lanza è pressoché inascoltabile già dall attacco, voce strozzata in gola, qualche acuto senza dare senso a ciò che canta, pessimo

I prefer Wunderlich as his appears the most effortless, he hardly breaks the surface at any point though he does "massacre" the final words "soave piu" -doing a kind of "Joe Biden" slur of the words - but Wunderlich was not a native Italian speaker after all. The incomparable Kathleen Ferrier would be next and then Schipa. More contemporary male soprano singers would be even better and much much more authentic as this aria was written for a castrato -Senesino I think!

It's my pleasure Vicky, thank you for listening, I'm glad that you are enjoying some of my videos. Three tenors share first place at the top of my list of favourites, Enrico Caruso, John McCormack and, of course, Jussi Bjorling and I started my UA-cam channel in order to help to preserve their names by uploading recordings with improved audio in the hope that younger listeners might find them more acceptable. I read in Anna Lisa Bjorling's biography of Jussi that in the 1930s the American entrepreneur Charles Wagner agreed to be Jussi's manager because he felt that his voice had the best qualities of Caruso and McCormack, so my three favourites are a nice mix. I'm not a member of the JBS-USA. I'm actually in the UK. but I wish every success to your organisation.

  • @giovanelliartistmanagement3940

Grazie Michael !

Although I was a fan of Bjorling starting in the late 1950, the recording that most pleased my ears was that of Caruso and Ancona for its balance of voices and softness of tone quality, perhaps in part due to the recording technology of that era.

Hello Lawrence. In my UA-cam recommended videos yesterday was one of an Australian tenor called Lawrence Allen and I thought "I must tell Lawrence that he shares his name with an Australian tenor". However, I now know that you share much more than your name. For some reason, perhaps just something like the spelling of "favourite", I thought that you were in the USA, I don't know if you are still singing but, in my opinion, back in 1984 you were a top class tenor, absolutely brilliant, and after all the nice things you've said about my You Tube videos over the past few years, it's nice to be able to return the compliment. How could you fail to be good with Caruso as your inspiration!!

@@michaelmcgrailengland Hello Michael, I am so humbled and flattered to receive your comment and it is nice to be recognised and of course also for the wonderful restoration work you’ve done. You have (with technology) been able to give the world an indication of what the great singers of the past really sounded like. Caruso has been my idle since I was a boy for I grew up in a musical family who sat around the piano and sang on Sunday evenings before television and listened to the singers on vinyls. I also had the fervent support of Australia’s two greatest tenors namely Ronald Dowd, who became my closest and trusted friend, and Donald Smith - I’m sure they are both known to you. Incidentally I had a work colleague at JC Williamson Theatres Ltd here in Melbourne, who heard and witnessed our King of tenors Caruso on a number of occasions including his very last performances of La Juive at the Met. His name is was Claude Kingston( referred to as Mr Kingston in the Firm) and who died in the late 1970’s). I will never forget what he told me of the experience witnessing Caruso’s performance that night in La Juive “all the singers were of high quality BUT Caruso dominated and was something else above them all”. Mr Kingston wrote a book “ It don’t seem a day too much”. He was the Firm’s Director responsible for all the great artists that in concert and opera, performed in Australia from Melba through to Sutherland/Pavarotti( 1965 Williamson/Sutherland Opera Season) . There is so much more I could say but I would be rambling on a bit. Again Thankyou so much Michael and I look to your up and coming work with ongoing interest. You are a marvel.👏👏👏

What a treat to listen to this wonderful compilation. This is a great example of how some singers are better at Baroque style than others, despite all of them having truly magnificent voices. "Ombra" requires great vocal control especially on the exposed entrance note which must be sung softly and spot-on in the center of the pitch, no scooping, and then gradually crescendo. Only Ferrier and Wunderlich nail it.

Hi, sorry, but "tree out" is the wrong translation. "Träd ut" means 'step out' (of the harp). The word "träd" sure means tree but of course sounds totally silly. (I am an Aslög myself and have heard about this aria all my adult life. Nice.

Michael McGrail, my cup runneth over !! I have for some time looking to revisit this famous concert with its prime 1957 Jussi, but to have your hand upon it, and replete with lyrics and photo gallery is just incredible. I went first to "Flicken kom ..." and am listening to the whole concert as I write. What a document! (One ??: I was always under the impression that it was Mitropoulos conducting the NYPhil on this occasion. I guess I stand corrected.) No words suffice to thank you for this extraordinary contribution to the Bjorlling legacy, Michael. And for those just becoming acquainited with this part of the Sibelius repertoire, I do strongly recommend the 'definitive performances' of Jorma Hynninen recorded in the original piano version (complete), and the selections of the orchestrated versions. They are remarkable documents.

It's my pleasure Marc, thank you for listening, I'm really pleased that you like the video. I'm pretty sure that the conductor was Martti Siliä as his name is given on the Carnegie Hall performance history and I've put a link below to the web page. I'm not familiar with Jorma Hynninen and I'll have a listen later. Thanks for these comments hornshrink, especially your mention of Jorma Hynninen I heard him several times in Finland, also at Chicago Lyric (Don Carlo, as I recall) and have many of his CDs. Also am glad that I heard Björling 4 times in NYCity: first as a teenager (1955 duets with Tebaldi at Carnegie Hall0, then Ballo at the Met '56, also recitals in '56 and '59). The sound quality is excellent and singing as you'd expect from Jussi of high polished musical perfection. It's my pleasure Sheila, thank you for watching/listening, I'm glad that you like the video. It does involve quite a bit of work but I enjoy it and the new eyes help a a lot, just need some new ears now!!! I used to listen to the radio a lot and recorded some great music over the years. Not just classical but loads of Folk, Country and Jazz mostly from Radio 2 but also a lot from the Irish radio. Terry Wogan's breakfast show sent me off to work with a smile for many years. I seldom listen to the radio now, there's so much music on the internet but in some ways it's not quite the same, it was nice to hear the announcers like Allan Keith on Your Hundred Best Tunes, I listened to it just about every week until he retired at about age 90.

@@michaelmcgrailengland yes Sunday night used to be a great radio night , I think David Jacobs took over from Allan Keith. I love UA-cam and Spotify and with my fancy hearing aids can listen directly into my ears when I’m out with the 🐶! But Radio 3 still delivers, however I access it. After I listened to your JB, UA-cam popped up with an amazing Stockholm 1985 concert with some of the greats paying tribute to him. Mostly past their best but still wonderful!
